I dont know if it's because I saw this movie at a certain point in time in my life, but it made me think more than any film has ever possibly. Supposing the idea of the 'second wave' of no wave music was just a commercial product made me suspect that everything is now commercial. When you go out to a party sponsored by Paper, or Belvedeer or Levis it almost predetermines the atmosphere and in a sense makes it conform to its idea of what it should be. Much like so much of New York conforms to what it thinks New York should be. Whether it's music, art or anything. It's just a city, and you can project on to it whatever you want to. It's important to know your roots, but just rehashing them isn't progress.

I found this on my town's historical website. Oddly enough, 1 of the 4 cut and paste prophecies shown here has actually been realized...When this was probably drafted (as a joke, right?) and published in the town newspaper the area probably had a lot more optimism because now any local official would shit on all of these ideas.

The over-sized golf cart - Tours of the town would start and end at the common. Maybe if the subway from New York to Grafton was built there would be a need for these vehicles.

Subways to New York - It sounds like they were planning on building a subway to new york...I just want to live to see the 2nd ave line open.

You can still go to the top of the tower in the hotel building on the right. I think it's one of those hush hush things but they don't lock that door to the top. It's actually quite pretty because no one thinks to go there or the common for that matter. Just embracin my local history.

This is the original image that was eventually colored and used for their debut album The B-52's. I used to have a sketchbook with the colored version as the cover. Actually I also had a pin as well. The image resonates with me. If I could get my hands on a T-shirt I'd rock it too. It's gay but it's cool and natural.

When I saw this original in the exhibit book for the Brooklyn Museum's Who Shot Rock & Roll show I was struck. Not shocked or surprised, but intrigued to see that an image I had let become a part of me had another dimension; an original who's stripped down version made me feel like I was seeing it again for the first time.

Crazy how this music is 30 years old?

My first introduction to Francis Bacon was through a furniture painting project presented to my class four or five years ago. A friend o mine chose to paint one of Bacon's screaming Pope Innocent X's on the back of an old radio. Until a few weeks back when I saw the Bacon Centenary Retrospective at the MET, Bacon to me meant monsters with scary teeth and screaming Popes.

His work along with its followers has always given me the chills. When I thought of Bacon I thought of monsters. Now I see Bacon's influence the more I think about his grotesque distorted figures with gaping mouths filled with blood and teeth.

His piece Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion done in 1944, was one of the very first pieces at the exhibit. The 'Figures' are textbook bacon represented to me what he was all about.

Dead Hands from Zelda Ocarina of Time was always the most frightening of the Zelda monsters for me. It made me fear the Shadow Temple where it lived and where I had to fight it. The figure would lurch around slowly, while making a disturbing creaking noise and then snap its neck out and bite you. Like much of Bacon's paintings all of Dead Hand's power was in its mouth.

The 'Child-Eating Monster' in Pan's Labyrinth was hands down not only the most frightening thing in that movie but one of the most frightening things I'd ever seen. I had a conversation about this monster with my professor who explained what made it so alarming. The absence of something, in this case eyes. If you leave just one important feature out, it becomes alarming. A figure without a mouth or nose is frightening as well. Think Lord Voldermort for the nose. Its what makes him freaky.

Bacon's fascination with the mouth carries over to his portraits of animals such as Study of a Baboon. done in 1953

His technique called 'shuttering' also influenced me. In the exhibit it was explained as "Using vertical lines of paint that blend foreground and background. It merges the figure and the setting, with neither taking precedence."

Aside from his personal fascinations and painting techniques, the exhibit was a tortured love story. George Dyer was his lover and live in companion for some time during the 60's and 70's before succumbing to alcoholism. Dyer's life, love and death are remembered in the second half of the exhibition through distorted portraits and naked figures.

The gallery ends with Bacon's paintings reflecting on the deaths of those around him. There was no inconsistency in this since his work never left the darker facets of life, it just seemed sad. It felt like watching an old man die who's life you had just seen and now felt it was partly yours too.

Patrick was all bite last night as he lashed out on gay marriage policies, shitty microphones, feedback and one annoying dweeb in the crowd. Before he jumped into the rights anthem "Battle" he aroused the crowd with by asking a series of questions ending in "Who here wants to marry the same sex?" followed by cheers and fist pumps. Then he brought up the UK's bogus policy on not allowing public schools to discuss gay marriage, inciting the crowd further. Through The Bachelor he finally decided to call out these injustices through songs like Battle , which turned into a seriously intense heavy metal civil rights chant.

He changed things up for his other songs, notably Accident & Emergency, which he played electric guitar for. I realized that The Libertine is probably my favorite live song to dance to and Hard Times will be a new live classic at his shows. He ended playing us a new song Armistice from the second half of what was going to be the Bachelor double-album that he will just release with his next album.

Now I sort of have different point of view. Despite all the layering, collaging and mixed media put into thie piece it still comes out extremely polished in the end. I guess that's the fun in viewing his work though - you aren't sure how he quite did it because it's comprised of so many different elements and techniques. I just wish these individual techniques stood out more instead of being polished over for a clear, crisp and commercial look.

Just saw the Shepard Fairey show at the ICA in Boston

In general I thought the whole exhibit was a bit arrogant. He's lining himself up as the contemporary Warhol or Haring. I think I just have a thing against his "style." The red and black color scheme creates the propaganda aesthetic but loses its power when its on a museum wall. It just felt like each piece could be better used for a green day album cover.

The interesting part to me was his visual language that he has created through repetition in his works. Arrows, oriental patterns, andre the giant, among other symbols faintly fall into the composition of all his works. In this sense he can be compared to Haring with a unique and consistent visual language. Unlike Haring though, these visuals are created through prints or stencils so they are exact and unfaltering which I'm not sure detracts or adds to his work. By having such exact repetition it makes it harder to consider the works fine art. Warhol was a painter too so many of his replicas has differences in their brush work.

I think that's what was sorely missing from Fairey's work - a single brush stroke or some scribble of pencil, something to signify error and human creation. Without these little marks his work is perfect for magazines, albums, skate decks and T-shirts (available in the ICA gift shop among Fairey hats, tote bags and scarves). Maybe that's where the majority of his art should remain...Haring did do the same thing with the shameless and experimental self-promotion of opening his Pop Shop but his works feel more individualized and less meant for mass consumption.

After 2 days of digesting the exhibit it was exactly what I thought it would be. Nothing freaky or unpredictable, just real-life images that I had seen before in the media.

Two pieces that particularly held my interest in the exhibit were 'Duality of Humanity' and 'Arab Woman.' Both aren't celebrities, and so I was able to concentrate more on the messages and expressions on their faces than other pieces. One thing Fairey is able to create is an entrancing gaze. Staring up at the 6 foot tall 'Arab Woman' in real life was more powerful than anything you'll see in a magazine.

Bazille's Summer Scene of 1869. In honor of the nice weather, and the return of v-necks and shorts and (regrettably) flip flops. I remember the painting was noted for its obviousness of combining studio posed subjects with an outdoor study as the background. Who knows what went on in this studio when Bazille asked the models to get in swimsuits and pose for him.

Inspiration and influence are great powers to exercise. The later is the most powerful and I wish there were a way to measure it.

Lou Reed has had influence over me lately, but today it was direct. On the subway I was attempting to do my stealthy people sketching alone when a woman to my right started looking over my shoulder at my sketching. Her daughter beside her was seduced too. At Chambers, the mother tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I could draw her daughter. The girl looked away and down but smiled. The mother insisted and I said I had one stop but I'd do my best. She chose to look sideways - fuck i hate profiles and kids are hard too but i whipped a portrait out. That's my life: under pressure, in a time limit. I asked what her name was - 'Geniva' - I think of chocolate, Europe - I scribble her name under the portrait, rip out the page and say have a nice day and go to Canal St. I think I purposely didnt sign it to be romantic or something.

Anyways it was a proud ny moment while lou reed was playing in my earphones. No later than a half hour later I was walking through SoHo and I saw two mailboxes with his young image on it, stuck there and ripped up - a part of the SoHo landscape. and so my obsession with SoHo remains.

I think I channeled Lou Reed this weekend to be a drag audrey hepburn. Influence and its meaning has been on my mind more than enough. I shouldnt worry about it.

The music was confusing we couldnt decide if we love it or hate it because we couldnt dance to it. It was inspiring in the end because we came up with a 'clever' rhyme i wrote down in my phone after. After we ordered our food, We got into a good talk about where we see ourselves after school/ the state of our lives/ how there are really on 2 types of gay guys: brooklyn and manhattan. I told ash that I would have drank more tonight if I were alone for the wrong reasons and was glad to be out. Discussing things rationally made me upset and alone. I felt like the tomato basil soup in front of me was the best thing I had for a second. Ash thought she saw LL Cool J and followed him with her eyes. Cafeteria is full of couples in a chelsea atmosphere at an odd hour on an odd night. Couples are making out, drunk, going to the bathroom together and then theres me and ash dancind in our seats to hercules & love affair like were getting paid. Some of the waiters are remotely cute. As Ash watches LL Cool J I was sitting across her staring blankly in front of me thinking about how cold I was and how I just wanted to go sleep. I just wanted one of the waiters dressed in brown like a ups man to gently guide me as if i were attached to a fluid bag in a hospital. The moment was all about me and pleasing me. I was guided to the back of the kitchen and there was a brown bed waiting for me in a dark corner. Together me and the waiter lie down, ignoring our surroudings and quickly subside to sleep. Then when the dream can get no better i focus again on ash, and on the candle beneath her and ask about LL Cool J. He left and we never found out if it was him. I accidentally left my card in the place and when we went back to get it, the waiter with it subtly hits on me. Odd and unusual night.

This is what my 'break' feels like so far:

Last night me and Mrs. Winkler were discussing how it takes 10,000 hours of doing something to become a 'master' at it. Like it would take 3 hours a day, 7 days a week for 476 weeks to become a master at doing anything, granted you did what you did consistantly for 3 hours each day. We also discussed American artists and I realized my love for really obvious American artwork and artists like Wayne Thiebaud. I'm working and creating in the lines of his inspiration right now.

Foreshadowing. Jenna used to dress me up and I would love to play along. She would do my hair, and I would cut her barbie's hair. It was the beginning of our great brother-sister relationship.

Jenna was the first one to show me Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who's work Water I recently saw in V magazine. I'm going back to Massachusetts soon and I can't wait to just see old friends and relive childhood a little bit.

I always looked down on sva, not sure why, thought it didnt take itself as seriously or only jersey kids went there or something. Im reading Keith Haring's biography and its so bizarre to me to hear about all these kids participating in the Club 57 scene and being active artists but in a cluster of greatness. IM SO INFLUENCED. Honestly, echoes of their past have big parallels to my environment. Im all about clusters of greatness. Back then I think people could take more risks while in school. They could just be more involved in the city and go out more or something. I feel like a lot of kids just see their limit at Pratt not far beyond the iron gates.

Also I had my internship. I designed a wave pattern for a border that will go on a logo on the underside of dinnerware like plates and bowls!!! $#$$ SO ACCOMPLISHED. Really though I love the environment/SoHo/working/getting poorer - the more money and sleep I loose the happier I am right now.

Ive been feeling like an ALTBAG lately and the Replacement's Waitress in the Sky is on my ALTBAG playlist that's on altrepeat right now.

During fashion week when I crashed the Seven after party at the Tribeca Grand Hotel, I was sharing the dance floor with my aforementioned man in a suit with boots when Enjoy The Silence came on and it was bliss. Favorite Depeche Mode song hands down. Below is the video for it. What is Dave wearing? The sunglasses are nice though. Crazy to watch this now.

I've been struggling on where to categorize Dave Gahan. In his early New Wave photos I used to think he was cute. He kind of carried that early 80's Johnny Depp look, only more early 80's New Wave gay. He kind of seems like he could be a sibling with Depp and Morrissey, but the least attractive of the three. I think it's because his face cuts too short. Very tiny. Wow this is vain I'll stop.

I think him younger is cuter: pre new wave influence...because look what happened to him and the rest of the band in the mid eighties:

oh oh its November already, and It's knots that I'm turning 20 soon. I've been up all night distracting myself and thinking about my family, relationships and the city over and over and where they all stand right now. It's a big task.
